SUA offers two study abroad programs in Valpara铆so through IFSA and ISA.

Location

Valpara铆so is a port city on the coast of Chile. It has a metropolitan population of nearly 1 million.

Architecture

Nicknamed 鈥淛ewel of the Pacific,鈥 Valpara铆so’s unique architecture has earned the city protection as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art

Valpara铆so is known for its art. It is the location of famous poet Pablo Neruda鈥檚 home as well as a number of vibrant and elaborate street murals. 

I never imagined before going to Chile that I would build such strong connections with local people, take initiative, and become more open to different ideas and cultures.

IFSA, Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Valpara铆so; Universidad de Valpara铆so

This program is for students with higher-level Spanish proficiency.

Program Characteristics

This program is only offered in the fall semester, which takes place from mid-July to mid-December.

2.5 GPA

You can choose to study at Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Valpara铆so or Universidad de Valpara铆so. All students take advanced written and oral Spanish in addition to student-selected classes alongside degree-seeking students. 

You will take a four-day excursion to either the Mapuche communities near the Andean mountains (fall semester) or La Serena in northern Chile (spring semester). 

You will live with a Chilean host family which provides three meals a day and laundry. Host families live in Vi帽a del Mar, 15 minutes from Valpara铆so.

 

ISA, Pontificia Universidad Cat贸lica de Valpara铆so

This program is for students with lower-level Spanish proficiency.

Program Characteristics

The fall semester takes place from mid-July to mid-December. The spring semester begins in late February and ends in late June.

2.5 GPA

You will enroll in the Spanish and Latin American Studies program, designed for all levels of proficiency.

You can take excursions to destinations such as Horc贸n and Zapallar, Isla Negra, Puc贸n, Santiago, National Stadium, and Valle Nevado.

You will live with a Chilean host family which provides three meals a day and laundry.
